Japan Cake Journal

Baking guides, regional recipes and home kitchen notes

Where a commercial partner fits into the paper

Japan Cake Journal is written for home bakers in South Africa, and the editorial desk keeps it that way. Partners support columns and archives; they do not buy their way into a method step.

Enquiries are handled as ordinary editorial correspondence from Rosebank, Johannesburg. Nothing here is a product listing, and no reader data changes hands.

Japan Cake Journal: for business

What a partnership can support

Reader test kitchen

A monthly column that works through reader submissions, compares what each baker did and records the single change that moved the result. Useful when a partner wants to be visible next to real corrections rather than polished photos.

Seasonal fruit adaptations

Southern Hemisphere timing changes what is worth baking in March versus September. This column reworks fillings and toppings around what is actually ripe, and suits partners working with fruit, dairy or preserving equipment.

The glossary

Short, plain-language entries for terms such as tangzhong, kuromitsu and shokupan. A quiet place for a partner whose work is genuinely about ingredients or terminology, without turning the page into an advert.

Start with castella basics

Sourcing notes

Columns on where anko and matcha turn up in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and how to read the labels. Fits partners in import, retail or distribution who can speak to what is on the shelf.

What stays fixed

Sponsored material is labelled as sponsored. Recipes stay written in grams first, with timings for small kitchens and standard home ovens. The paper does not sell reader data, run paid rankings, or place partner products inside method steps.

What a partnership here does and does not mean

A few terms are worth stating plainly before any conversation starts, so nobody reads more into a commercial arrangement than the desk can actually deliver.

Independence comes first

Japan Cake Journal is an independent food newspaper. A partner can support a column, but the desk keeps the final say on what gets written, tested and corrected. Support does not buy a verdict on a product.

Sponsored work is labelled

When material is sponsored, the page says so. Readers should never have to guess whether a paragraph came from the editorial desk or from a partner, and the label stays visible for as long as the piece is online.

Method steps stay untouched

Recipes are written in grams first, with timings for small kitchens and standard home ovens. No partner product is placed inside a method step, and no ingredient is swapped out to suit a supplier.

No paid rankings, no reader data

The paper does not sell reader data and does not run paid rankings. A partner cannot pay to sit higher in a sourcing column, a test kitchen report or the glossary.

Corrections apply to everyone

If a column turns out to be wrong, it gets corrected in the open, whether the piece was sponsored or not. The same standard covers the reader test kitchen and the monthly bake-along notes.

Where enquiries go

Commercial enquiries are handled by the editorial desk in Rosebank, Johannesburg, at The Firs, 32 Baker Street, 2196. They arrive through the contact page and are read as ordinary editorial correspondence, not as a sales queue.

Nothing above is a contract on its own. It is the working position the desk applies to every arrangement, and it is the reason a partner can appear in a column without the column changing shape around them.
